Suzy Bolt's Top Ten Tips for Promoting Recovery

2. Connection

This was the first thing I intuitively knew that I needed personally when I was sick and the world of medicine couldn’t offer me much to work with. I needed a tribe of people who understood what it felt like to feel so unwell and there be no solution or quick fix. I can’t stress the importance of this enough to anyone reading this - listening to others talking about what they find hard, what they have tried to help themselves and what lessons we can learn from watching others progress is deeply cathartic as well as helpful.

Finding a recovery buddy has been something that some people have really benefitted from whilst others have connected with course cohorts like our mindfulness courses or our Fern Programme cohorts. It CAN NOT be a doom club - this will have the opposite effect and leave people with diminished hope for the future and a fear of never recovering. The connections need to be well managed and empathic whilst offering kindness and love alongside the belief that anything is possible if you give it the right conditions to thrive and a lot of patience.

You can also benefit from the shared hive mind of medical knowledge and experiences of others in a support group as those with positive interactions with doctors and protocols can share their stories with the rest of the group. The human need for connection has been the underlying foundation for all of our work at 360mindbodysoul - first of all because of pandemic lock downs and then due to needing to share the experience of long covid recovery. Read Vivek Murthy’s (Surgeon General of the USA) book Together to understand how essential this human connection is to our health.
